The FP4Party Strikes Back

Strike Back Like the Empire! Yes folks after a long wait, the FP4Party Strikes Back! And I’m back into the groove of things. And despite it being the start of term, it gives me all the more reason to get out and give the Rolleiflex and Mamiya m645 a bit of a winter workout. Especially the poor Mamiya which has been spending much of its time as a project camera. But sometimes I have to let it out to play a little bit more! This time around I shot only three rolls of 120 film for the January Party. But to switch it up, I decided to shoot in three different cameras and process in three different ways.

Group One – Think Square
There are days I feel bad for some of my cameras that I haven’t been using them of late. So since New Year’s Eve, I’ve been on a bit of kick with my Rolleiflex 2.8F, so I made sure it came out for the FP4Party as well. Being at work during the week I have worn out most areas that are easily drivable from the campus in the town of Oakville. But having plans to shoot in the main part of the Old Town, I headed to the other side of the harbour and the area around Kerr Village.

Lyon’s Cabin, the oldest structure in Oakville, Ontario – believed to have been built around 1810.

Group Two – Wine Me, Dine Me
Being start of term and having a lot of illness around my office, meant I couldn’t always get away from the office, so for the second group, I broke out another old favourite, the Bessa folder. This beautiful 6×9 camera can show off what FP4+ can do as a film. That said, I still haven’t nailed down the focusing on the camera, even using an external rangefinder and adjusting the focusing helical on the lens I still lost several frames due to being seriously out of focus.

J-Wing
I spent many hours here in J-Wing, as many classes I had were hosted here. Even now, I spend a lot of time supporting the rooms here.
Voigtländer Bessa – Voigtländer Anastigmat Voigtar 1:4,5 f=11cm – Ilford FP4+ @ ASA-200 – Kodak TMax Developer (1+4) 9:00 @ 20C
SCAET
My favourite building on campus is SCAET, a little taste of modern, but the brick and glass exterior disguse a wide open bright space.

The Green Space
Like McCranny Valley behind campus, the green walking paths between the two core buildings makes Trafalgar Campus one of the prettiest of the three campuses of Sheridan.

Group Three – Running south on Lake Shore Drive
Ever since I started taking photography seriously, I quickly learned that from where I work, it’s a ten-minute drive to the historic heart of Oakville, Ontario. A wonderful downtown filled with historic buildings some dating back to the early 19th-Century. And while the Lakeshore Road (Old Highway Two) has many interesting structures, to dig deep head further down towards to lake to see the grand homes of the people who shaped the town. Even the first mayor’s house remains as does the grand home of the town’s founder, William Chisholm.

Victorian
A beautiful Victorian Villa is one of my favourite homes in Old Oakville.
Mamiya m645 – Mamiya-Sekor C 35mm 1:3.5 N – Ilford FP4+ @ ASA-125 – Blazinal (1+25) 9:00 @ 20C
Georgian
And while the flare of the Victorian is nice, I’m a fan of the symatry that comes with Georgian Styling.

St. John
Of course I had to get a shot of one of the many churches that populate the downtown.

If there is one thing I enjoy about these Parties is that it brings out some of the best from the online community. And it also pushes me to explore these film stocks and has brought several stocks I wasn’t too fond of into sharper focus and how to bend the film to my will and creative vision. I hope that we get more chances with FP4+ this year as well as TMax and Delta Jam, even the Summer Film Party is fun. So here’s to another year, more film, and more creativity!
