When I was little there wasn’t anything like Junior Kindergarten, in fact, it didn’t exist. Instead, we called it Nursery School, and honestly, it’s the same thing. The Nursery school I attended along with many of the kids that would go on to become my first circle of friends took place here at St. Paul’s United Church in downtown Milton. As a cooperative, parents would assist the teachers as volunteers, and for a fee, the kids could attend. Now the memories I have of nursery school are a little muddled, mostly from details that my parents have told me about. That I much preferred the blue room (creative play) rather than the yellow room (more arts and crafts). My teacher, Mrs Gervis, and the images in the family albums. Today the rooms that I was in are no longer there, in fact, the whole school no longer exists. The church is still there. The congregation of St. Paul’s traces itself back to 1852 and was among the first churches in town as a Wesleyan congregation and the building you see above was built in 1890 as a Methodist congregation. During the union of 1923, the congregation joined with some of the members of Knox when the United Church of Canada saw formation. The view I chose to photograph I feel captures St. Paul’s far better than any other view of the church building as you get the steeple and the rose window in the sanctuary better than from main street.
